INDEPENDENCE – Norma JEAN Meyer, 94 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died Sunday, August 30, 2026, at UnityPoint – Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Private family ceremony will take place at a later time.

Norma Jean was born August 27, 1932, around Aurora, in rural Buchanan County, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Zelma (Martin) Poll. She attended school in Independence and later earned her GED. On August 1, 1951, she married Norbert Dean Meyer. Together they had two sons, Joseph and Gerald. The couple would later divorce. Later she married Clem Michaels, and they would later divorce.

Jean enjoyed baking, cooking, and entertaining. She was a cook for multiple restaurants and organizations over the years, in Independence, Strawberry Point, and Oelwein. She volunteered at the Senior Center and for 21 years, she volunteered with Hawkeye Community College. Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church in Independence and later the Indee Community Bible Church.

Jean is survived by 1 son Joesph (David Lee) Meyer of Bakersfield, California; 3 grandchildren, Christian Meyer – Hill, Samantha (Dylan) Evans, Jesse Meyer; and 3 great grandchildren, River Evans, Henry Evans, and Max Evans.

She is preceded in death by her parents; 1 Son, Gerald “Jerry” Meyer; 2 brothers, Louis Poll, Dale Poll; and 1 sister, Ardela Dubbled.
