INDEPENDENCE – Winona Avonne Caldwell, 89 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died of natural causes, Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Lexington Estates in Independence.

Graveside Services will be 10:30 a.m. - Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence.

Winona was born May 18, 1936, on the family farm in rural Independence, the daughter of Glen Avery and Thona Yvonne (Hare) Satterlee. She graduated from Rowley High School with the class of 1954. Winona had an assortment of jobs over the years, but her most beloved position was that of a secretary in the offices of Rockwell-Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she retired.

Winona loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her daughters and their families, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She liked keeping up her garden and enjoyed doing crafts. Winona loved music and liked to dance and play the guitar and accordion. She also was fond of her time in Texas where she wintered for many years.

Winona is survived by her daughters, Candy (Darrell) Barfels of Littleton, Iowa, Melody (Chris) Kress of Manchester, Iowa; three grandchildren, Derek Kress, Nikki (Christopher) Opp, Makayla (Cody) Allison; four great grandchildren, Riley, Adysen, Gage, Rowan; one sister, Ronda (Don) Downs of Oelwein, Iowa; one brother, William “Bill” (Karen) Satterlee of Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents.
