Shirley was born December 17, 1955, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Orvel Edward Kern and Shirley Rae (Graves) Kern. She attended school in Independence and spent most of her working life in food service and hospitality. Throughout different stages of her life, Shirley was married to Ronnie Millard, Sr., Vincent Diskin, and David Harriman. Shirley may have been small in stature, but she had a larger-than-life personality. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, and she made many cherished memories with them over the years. She enjoyed camping with family, especially during Elkader Days. She loved cooking and baking for her family, and you could often find her making homemade chicken noodle soup, fudge, cookies, pies, or banana bread. She also enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions, especially in the Amish community. Shirley loved visiting the casino, where she could often be found playing bingo, cards, or slots. Regardless of her situation, she always found a way to make ends meet. Shirley is survived by two daughters, Sherry Kern of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Shana (Martin Olayo) Albright of Waterloo, Iowa; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Karen Hinde of Independence; two brothers, Orvel Kern of Fairbank, Iowa, and Rod (Kathy) Kern of Hazelton, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jack Kern; and two sons, Ronnie Lee Millard, Jr. (in infancy) and Dewey Allen Millard, Sr. Memorials may be directed to the family.
