INDEPENDENCE – Robert “Scot” Tegen, 71 years old, of Salem, Oregon and formerly of Independence and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2025, in Salem, Oregon, after an extended illness.

Private family graveside services will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, Iowa.

Scot was born on May 7, 1954, in Independence, the son of Donald and LaVonne (Andrews) Tegen. He attended school in Independence and graduated from Jefferson High School with the class of 1972. He went on to work at the family variety store for many years.

Scot moved to Colorado and managed Yellow Front Stores in Aurora, Colorado, for a short time, before he returned to Iowa and worked for Wilson Foods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After Wilson Foods closed, Scot worked for Terex Co. in Cedar Rapids for many years, and was transferred to the company’s Portland, Oregon, location. He enjoyed the work and was able to travel the world working on rock crushing machines.

Scot married Minda O’Neil in Reno, Nevada, and together they had over 24 happy years in Salem. Minda preceded Scot in death on May 5, 2025. They loved to camp and hit a few casinos along the way. Scot was an avid modeler and HO train enthusiast. He was proud to have his own little “toy room.” He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, watching NASCAR races, and attending Oshkosh air shows.

Scot is survived by his brother, Terry (Angie) Tegen of Phoenix, Arizona; his sister, Pam Shurtz of Independence, Iowa; his nephew, Jeff (Tammy) of Phoenix, Arizona; his nieces Julie (Eli) Beck of Center Point, Iowa, and Laurie (Mike) Wieseler of Ankeny, Iowa. He is also survived by his stepdaughters Michelle and Kimberly O’Neil and his stepson, Donald. He will also be lovingly remembered by his great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Minda; and his brother-in-law, Curt Shurtz.
