INDEPENDENCE – Marjorie Anne Deke, 94 years old of Independence, IA, died Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Buchanan County Health Center’s Lexington Estate.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. – Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, IA, with inurnment at Floral Hills Memorial Garden, Hazleton, IA.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Saturday at the church. Memorials will be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church and to the Buchanan County Health Center Hospital Auxiliary. Online condolences may be posted at www.White-MtHope.com.

Marjorie was born March 4, 1931, in Independence, the daughter of Anton John George Gerdes and Gladys Viola (Borchers) Gerdes. She graduated from Independence High School with the 1949 class. On September 2, 1951, she married Bernard Charles Deke in Independence. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. R.R. Pardun, DDS, also as a clerk at Bland’s Flower Shop, Tegen’s Dime Store, Anderson’s and enjoyed volunteering at the hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary, Chautauqua Literary Club, Independence Garden Club, Mary Sarah Circle, and Buchanan County Tourism. She loved her home, gardening, cooking, attending her grandchildren’s events and volunteering.

Marjorie is survived by two daughters, Porcia Grover of Independence, Polly (Ron) Fank of Independence, IA; 4 grandsons Brian Grover, Brett (Cristy) Grover, Ryan (Maddie) Fank, Kyle (Aubry) Fank; and 7 great grandchildren, Wyatt, Morgan, and Jayden Grover, Addison and Caleb Grover, Rowyn and Rylan Fank; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard on March 10, 1992; also, her parents; son-in-law, John Grover; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Bob and Ruth Gerdes, and Joan Gerdes; one sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Bob Quigley.
