Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. - Thursday, May 22, 2025, at White Funeral Home, Independence, IA, with Very Rev. David M. Beckman, officiating. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, at the Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point, IA, with military rites to be accorded by the American Legion Post 218 of Strawberry Point assisted by the United States Army. Visitation will be for an hour before the services at the funeral home. Denny was born July 9, 1952, in Manchester, IA, the son of Roy Thomas Atkinson, Jr. and Lavon Blanche (Thomas) Atkinson. He graduated from North Linn High School in Troy Mills, IA, with the class of 1970. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1971, during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany as a clerk. Denny was a talented industrial painter and body shop technician. He liked to work on cars and motorcycles; and when he was not working, he was riding his motorcycles. Denny spent most of his adult life in Colorado, eventually returning to Iowa, where he was a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He loved everything about motorcycles, especially his Harley Davidson. He loved being with his family, especially his nieces and nephews; and he was an avid reader, with his most recent favorite books being Westerns by Louis L'Amour. Denny is survived by two sisters, Sandra Merritt of Marion, IA, Mary (Steve) Ohl of Independence, IA; one brother, Mark (Cathi) Atkinson of Olin, IA; his sister-in-law, Donna Atkinson of Dubuque, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Danny Atkinson; one nephew, Dalton DeSotel; and his brother-in-law, Bill Merritt.
