Independence – James Judson “Judd” Toale, 81, and Patricia Ann Toale, 83, of Independence, IA, died moments apart, of natural causes on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. – Thursday, February 22, 2018, at St. John Catholic Church, Independence, IA, with Rev. David M. Beckman and Rev. Msgr. Thomas E. Toale as concelebrants. Music will be provided by Bonnie O'Brien & the St. John's Choir with Shelly Reck, vocal soloist, and Catherine Toale, piano soloist. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military Rites, for Judd, will be conducted by Sheehan – Tidball American Legion Post #30 and Bechter – Boies VFW Post #2440.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 21st from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at White Funeral Home, Independence, IA, where there will be a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Thursday at the funeral home.

James Judson “Judd” Toale was born August 29, 1936, in Independence, IA, the son of Peter James Toale and Grace (Short) Toale. He graduated from St. John Catholic High School with the class of 1954 and served in the U.S. Marines from 1954 to 1956. He was stationed at Parris Island in South Carolina, before he moved back to Independence and worked at John Deere. Judd was handy and liked to do his own auto repairs and always had a home improvement project in the works.

Patricia Ann Meaney was born November 3, 1934, in Oelwein, IA, the daughter of John Thomas Meaney and Mary Ellen (Considine) Meaney. Her family moved to Madison, WI, where she graduated from high school in 1952. Pat returned to the Waterloo area where she attended business school and modeled for the J.C. Penney Company. She worked as a loan officer at Home Savings & Loans, Waterloo, IA.

Judd and Pat were united in marriage on July 18, 1959, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, IA. The couple made their home in rural Waterloo, IA, before moving back to Independence in 1968. Judd was a machinist at John Deere Engine Works until his retirement in 1994. In his retirement, Judd liked to design and build houses. Pat worked at the Independence Bulletin Journal and was lead secretary for the Independence Chief of Police until her retirement in 1996.

Pat and Judd enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, playing cards, and spending time entertaining with family and friends. The couple also loved spending time on the golf course and visiting casinos.

Judd and Pat were members of St. John Catholic Church, Independence, IA, where Pat was active in the Rosary Society. Judd was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #4332 and Catholic Order of Foresters Court #1314. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Judd and Pat are lovingly remembered by 2 sons, Thomas (Linda Murphy) Toale of Waterloo, IA, Michael (Angela) Toale of Cresco, IA; 1 daughter, Michelle (Robert) Burke of Independence, IA; 4 grandchildren, Madeline Toale, Catherine Toale, Joseph Burke, and Jessica Burke; Pat’s 2 brothers, John “Bud” Meaney of Waterloo, IA, and Martin T. (Joyce) Meaney of Peosta, IA; and their sister-in-law, Roseann Toale of Independence, IA.

Judd’s parents; Pat’s parents; 1 son, Timothy John Toale; Judd’s brother, John “Jack” Toale; his 2 sisters, Helen Hodges and Shirley Ryan; and Pat’s sister, Helen Hild; preceded the couple in death.

Memorials will be directed to the church and Cedar Valley Hospice. White Funeral Home, Independence, IA is in charge of arrangements.
