Independence – Jean D. Postel, 84 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.  She was born on June 13, 1933, in Independence, the daughter of Chancey and Doris Margaret (Cook) Olsen.  She graduated from high school in Quasqueton, Iowa, with the Class of 1950.  On March 18, 1951, she and Billy Lee Postel were married in Waterloo, Iowa.  They later divorced.  Mrs. Postel was a nurses aide at Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence for 3 and a half years, and then, she was a psychiatric aide at the Mental Health Institute in Independence for 17 and a half years.  She retired in 1995.  She spent her time taking care of her children and grandchildren.  She also liked to sew, do crochet, and work puzzles.

Mrs. Postel is survived by 5 daughters, Mary Jean (Carl) Eddy and Wendy (Rick) Schoenfield, both of Independence, Pat (Larry) Hunziker of Shellsburg, Iowa, Brenda Freeland, of Hudson, IA, and Becky (Darrell) Williams of Vinton, Iowa, 2 sons, Mike Postel of Maynard, Iowa, and Kenneth (Robin) Postel of Independence, and 2 daughters-in-law, Charlotte Postel and Kathy Postel, both of Independence.  She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 1 sister, Margaret Miller of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sons, Bill Postel and Richard Postel, 1 son-in-law, Mike Freeland, 2 brothers, John Olsen and Mahlon Olsen, 1 sister, Marie Marter, and 2 great grandchildren, Maddee Jo Postel and Aaron Postel.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 8, 2018, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, with chaplain Robert McMurdock officiating.  Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7th, at the funeral home.
