Independence – Dr. Sushil K. Upadhyay, 77 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Sunday, December 3, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born on July 13, 1940 in Manasa, Madhya Pradesh (MP), India, the son of Parmanand and Kanchan (Ojha) Upadhyay. He attended medical school in India and did medical residency in the United States. On June 20, 1967, he and the former Nirmala (Nina) Devi Sharma were married in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. He had a family medical practice for nine years in India, and then, moved to the United States in 1978. Dr. Upadhyay has been a psychiatrist at the Mental Health Institute in Independence since 1986.

Dr. Upadhyay is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nina, 2 sons, Nitin (Amita) Upadhyay of Jaipur, India, and Ashish Upadhyay of Independence, Iowa, 3 daughters, Anupama Upadhyay of Chicago, Illinois, Nita Kumar of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Aksha Upadhyay of Independence, and 2 grandchildren, Akash Kumar and Aryan Upadhyay. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Anil (Chitra) Upadhyay and Mahesh (Sneh) Upadhyay, and 1 sister-in-law, Deepa Upadhyay, all of India.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ramesh Upadhyay.

The family will hold a time of visitation from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5^th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
