Jesup – James D. Vogel, 92 of Jesup, Iowa, died Friday, November 10, 2017, at ABCM Rehabilitation Center – West Campus in Independence, IA.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA, with Rev. Jeffrey A. Dole officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Rites conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342 of Jesup.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. – Monday, November 13th at the White Funeral Home in Jesup where there will be a Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue for an hour before services at the church on Tuesday.  Memorials will be directed to St. Athanasius School; Winding Creek Meadows, where Jim enjoyed living, and other charities.

Jim was born July 22, 1925, near Brandon in Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of Sylvester George “Wes” Vogel and Esther Catherine (McDonald) Vogel.  He graduated from Jesup High School with the class of 1943.  He served in the US Army from 1944 – 1946, including a tour in Germany.  On June 3, 1950, he was united in marriage to Elaine Margaret Oswald at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Waterloo, IA.  Jim was an office clerk at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo and also farmed before his retirement.  He was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church; Pump-Scheer American Legion Post #342; and Knights of Columbus Council #8227 in Jesup.

Jim is survived by five sons, Steven (Connie) Vogel of Jesup, Joseph (Kris) Vogel of Waterloo, Pat Vogel of Waterloo, Tim (Cindy) Vogel of Gilbertville, IA, Marty (Rhonda) Vogel of Blairstown, IA; six daughters, Sherri Schmitt of Waterloo, Margaret “Peggy” (David) Gilchrist of Urbandale, IA, Beth Augustine of Waterloo, Ann (Lowell) Fenner of Iowa City, IA, Nancy (Neil) Steege of Newhall, IA, Barb (Harry) Murtha of Victor, IA; also, 29 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Mary) Vogel of Independence; one sister, Eileen Splinter of Camarillo, CA; a sister in law, Ann Vogel of Oelwein and a brother in law, Myron Oswald of Harpers Ferry, IA.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elaine on July 13, 2012; four great grandchildren, one son in law, Steven Schmitt and one brother, John Vogel.
