Independence – Paul E. Bernard, 68 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, July 1, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.  He was born on April 19, 1948, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Homer Edward and Beatrice Adelyn (Lawless) Bernard.  He attended the BuchananCounty country schools.  He farmed in Buchanan County until retiring in 1997.  After that he was a maintenance worker at McDonald’s in Independence for several years.  Mr. Bernard enjoyed working with the livestock on the farm.  He could train dogs to help with the livestock.  He also enjoyed watching Western movies and TV shows.

Mr. Bernard is survived by 2 sons, Jeremy (Nikki) Bernard of Independence, Iowa, and Joseph (Vanessa Boddicker) Bernard of Brandon, Iowa, 3 grandchildren, and 2 brothers, Elwood Bernard and Daniel Bernard, both of Brandon, Iowa.  He is also survived by 1 niece Crystal (Richard) Straw of Independence, 1 nephew, William Bernard of Independence, and 1 sister-in-law, Joanne Bernard of Independence.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Mike Bernard.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m.on Friday, July 8, 2016, at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Rev. Elissa Dodge officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m.until 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 7^th, at the funeral home.
