Independence – Richard J. Brown, 68 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died suddenly at his home on Monday, January 25, 2016.  He was born on November 23, 1947, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Burton Richard and Alice Mary (Shannon) Brown.  He graduated from high school in Oelwein, Iowa, with the Class of 1968.  Mr. Brown worked at several small area businesses before retiring.  He enjoyed spending time visiting over coffee with his friends, playing pool, and spending time with his family.

Mr. Brown is survived by his mother, Alice Brown of Independence, Iowa, 2 brothers, Dale (Donna) Brown and Burton Brown, both of Independence, 1 sister, Susan (Aaron) Joens of Waterloo, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the V.F.W. Hall in Independence. Mr. Brown’s cremated remains will be placed in the Cremation Garden at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
