Independence – Ivan J. Steinbeck, 85 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, January 11, 2016, at the Buchanan CountyHealth Center in Independence.  He was born on November 10, 1930, in Westburg Township of Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of James Washington and Ruth Viola (Boots) Steinbeck.  He graduated from high school in Brandon, Iowa, with the Class of 1948. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.  On February 26, 1955, he and the former Marlene June Satterlee were married at the Brandon United Methodist Church in Brandon, Iowa.  Mr. Steinbeck was a short haul trucker who owned and operated his own company.  He also drove a school bus as he had before graduating from high school.  He never really retired.  He started driving a school bus for the Independence Community Schools in 1996.

Mr. Steinbeck was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Independence, the Bechter-Boies V.F.W. Post #2440, the Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post #30, and the N.R.A.  He was formerly a member of the Brandon Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed vacationing in Branson, Missouri, playing cards, his recent trip to Washington, D.C. on an Honor Flight, and restoring his REO truck.

Mr. Steinbeck is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marlene, 1 son, David (Terrace) Steinbeck of Evergreen, Colorado, 2 daughters, Beth (Mike) Little of Brandon, Iowa, and Amy Steinbeck of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and 5 grandchildren, Courtney (Matt) Templeton, Candace Little, Julie (Caleb) Downey, Walt Steinbeck, and Alan Steinbeck.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister, Norma Jean Nielsen.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2015, at the 1st United Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. Scott Meador officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a Military Service begins at 7 p.m.
