Independence – Arthur P. Fowlkes, Jr., 78 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.  He was born on November 20, 1936, in Independence, the son of Arthur Paul and Charlotte M. (Massingham) Fowlkes, Sr.  He attended school in Quasqueton, Iowa.  Mr. Fowlkes was a machine operator at John Deere in Waterloo until retiring in 1983.  Following his retirement he bought and sold scrap metal as a hobby.  He was a member of the U.A.W. Local #838 in Waterloo.  He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and going to the casinos to play the slot machines.

Mr. Fowlkes is survived by 2 daughters, Rhonda (Jim) Benson of Nashville, TN, and Gina (Trevor Halverson) Rasmussen of Waterloo, IA, and 5 sons, Arthur P. Fowlkes, III, Bruce Fowlkes, Steve Fowlkes, and Joe (Melissa) Fowlkes, all of Independence, IA, and Russell (Connie) Fowlkes of Bernice, OK.  He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Ed (Judy) Fowlkes of Independence, IA, and Richard (Sue) Fowlkes of Cedar Falls, IA, and 1 sister, Joan (Archie) Thomas of Waterloo, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, James Fowlkes and Herbert Fowlkes, and 1 sister, Peggy O’Brien.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2015, at the First Baptist Church in Independence with Pastor Mike Nemmers officiating.  Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
