Jesup – Michael D. Schmitt, Sr., 75 years old, of Jesup, Iowa, died on Saturday, December 20, 2014, at his home of natural causes.  He was born on March 23, 1939, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Alvie C. and Marguerite Kathleen (Hudkins) Schmitt. He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1957, and in 1961 he graduated from St. Cloud University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, with a B.A. in economics.  On October 17, 1959, he and the former Judith Anne Howery were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence.  She preceded him in death in 2008.  On October 2, 2010, he and the former Joyce Elaine Donlea were married at the Donlea home in Jesup.  Before retiring, Mr. Schmitt was a construction contractor and small businessman.  He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence.  He enjoyed time spent fishing, gardening, traveling, and chopping wood.  He also enjoyed skiing and was a medal winner in downhill racing with the National Standard Race (skiing).

Mr. Schmitt is survived by his wife, Joyce, 1 son, Mike (Stephanie) Schmitt, Jr. of Waverly, Iowa, 3 daughters, Beth (Charlie) Conklin of Independence, and Barb (Nathan) Stokke and Jennifer (Bob) Bowman, both of Geneva, Illinois, 3 step daughters, Kimberly Williams of Hartland, Minnesota, Bridget (Dan) Benjaminson of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Stacy (Russ) Petersen of Jesup, and 2 step sons, Don “Nick” (Terri) Donlea and LeRoy “Tony” (Julie) Donlea, both of Jesup.  He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren, 12 step great grandchildren, 1 step great great grandson, and 2 sisters, Joan (Gerald) McCalley of Independence, and Janice (Chuck) Devens of Dubuque, Iowa.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Richard Schmitt and Donald Schmitt, and 3 sisters, Kathleen Roberts, Eunice Corcoran, and Rita Michel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence.  Rev. Donald Plamondon will be the Celebrant.  Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22^nd, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
