Independence – Beverly J. Coulter, 77 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, December 19, 2014, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Independence.  She was born on February 25, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Edgar Ellsworth and Beulah Marie (Cole) Belzer.  She graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1955.  On June 24, 1956, she and Kenneth Wright Coulter were married at the First Methodist Church in Independence.  He preceded her in death in 2010.  Before retiring, Mrs. Coulter was a teacher’s aide and secretary at the Clear Lake Community Schools in Clear Lake, Iowa.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence, the Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Society.  She loved music and was active in the choirs at her church.  She also played the piano and the organ.  Mrs. Coulter also enjoyed day tripping with friends in the area.

Mrs. Coulter is survived by 1 son, David (Jeannie) Coulter of Clear Lake, Iowa, 1 daughter, Karen (Michael) Young of Dayton, Iowa, and 1 daughter-in-law, Deborah Coulter of Monroe, Iowa.  She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Matthew Coulter of Clear Lake, Krystal (Tyce) Fisher of Mason City, Katie Coulter of Dallas, Texas, Kerc Coulter of Monroe, Adam (Melissa) Young of Cedar Rapids, and Brandon Young of West Des Moines, Iowa, 2 great grandsons, Anthony Backer and Stefan Young, 1 sister, Jody Drake of Overland Park, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 son, Kenneth E. Coulter, and 2 sisters, Bonnie Greene and Barbara Satterlee.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22nd, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.  A Memorial Fund has been established for the 1st United Methodist Church in Independence.
