Independence – Connie A. Higgins, 66 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, October 6, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.  She was born on December 24, 1947, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence John and Rozena Marie (Zieser) Leaven.  She graduated from St. John’s High School in Independence with the Class of 1966.  On April 1, 1967, she and David Lynn Higgins were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence.  Mrs. Higgins was the computer systems manager for the Buchanan County Sheriff and the Independence Police Department for 30 years before retiring in 2007.  She then became the office manager for Physical Therapy Partners in Waterloo.  She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, the St. John’s Rosary Society, and Court Ascension #495 C.D.A. in Independence.  Mrs. Higgins was very active raising money and filling various positions in support of St. John’s School.  She was known as an accomplished cook with home made rolls and brownies being remembered as specialties.  She was a modest woman who was always interested in other people.

Mrs. Higgins is survived by her husband of 47 years, David, 1 son, Daniel (Jennifer) Higgins of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, 1 daughter, Amy (Eric) Kimball of Waterloo, Iowa, and 5 grandchildren.  She is also survived by 2 sisters, Doris Gosse of Vinton, Iowa, and Donna Mae McQueen of Wheatland, Wyoming, and 3 brothers, Larry Leaven of Marshalltown, Iowa, Ronald (Janet) Leaven of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mike (Jane) Leaven of Independence, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 1 brother, Kenneth Leaven.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2014, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence.  Fr. Jerry Kopacek will be the Celebrant.  Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a Vigil Service begins at 7 p.m.
