Independence – Howard C. Miller, 82 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.  He was born on May 3, 1932, in Littleton, Iowa, the son of Keith Orville and Sarah Mary (Bachman) Miller.  He graduated from high school in Independence, Iowa, with the Class of 1949.  During the Korean Conflict he served in the U.S. Navy.  On October 2, 1955, he and the former Betty Ann Lewis were married in Evansdale, Iowa.  She preceded him in death in 1998.  Mr. Miller was a skilled trades worker at John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa.  He retired in 1994.  He was a member of the Bechter-Boies V.F.W. Post #2440, the U.A.W. Local #838, and the Farm Bureau.  He was always willing to help neighbors with farm work or help transport Amish friends.  He enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading, and time spent with his family.

Mr. Miller is survived by 3 sons, Dean (Janice) Miller of Independence, Iowa, Dave W. Miller of Paola, Kansas, and Dale E. Miller of Ft. Worth, Texas, 1 daughter, Denise Barker of Rowley, Iowa, 4 grandchildren, William (Brandy) Miller, Cory (Kimey) Miller, Andrew (Shaylan) Miller, and Emily (Mike) Ryan, and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Charles (Mary Jane) Miller of Prescott, Arizona, and Maurice (Deanna) Miller of Shawnee, Kansas, and 1 sister, Phyllis (Ed) Cornwell of Shawnee, Kansas.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Keith Miller.

A Celebration of Howard’s Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at the V.F.W. Hall in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a Military Service begins at 7 p.m.
